Part 1
Choosing an Element: Choose an element to research from the list below:
College Prep Element Choices: Li, B, Be, C, N, F, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn
Honors Element Choices: Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Ag, Pd, Sn, Pt, Au, Hg, Pb, U, Pu, Rn, Sr, Cd, I
Researching the Element: Once you have chosen your element, you must then gather some information about your element. The periodic table is a great place to start your research.
You should gather enough information so that you can answer the following questions:
A. General Information
Research how your element is used. There are three fields in which to focus your research:
Industrial: What, where, and how is your element used in manufacturing goods and technology?
Biological/Medical: What, why, and how is your element used in medicine and/or biology of living organisms?
Environmental (Honors only): Where is your element found in the environment? How does the use of your element impact the environment?
College Prep students will research the uses in two fields: industrial and biological/medical.
Honors students will research uses in all three fields: industrial, biological/medical, and environmental.

Part 2
Now that you have gathered information about your element, and relevant images or pictures, it is time to put all of this information together for your website. You will use Weebly editor to generate and publish your website. If you prefer to use another method for generating your website, please clear your idea with your teacher beforehand.

The last thing for you to do is to create your commercial. Remember that your commercial should be informing your audience about your element in a way that is entertaining to watch.
You will create your commercial using a website called PowToon. You should sign up to use this site using your e-mail address. Your video you create for your commercial will be free! No need to sign up for premium upgrades.

- What is the name and chemical symbol of your element?
- What is the atomic number of your element?
- What is the average atomic mass of your element?
- What chemical group or family is your element in?
- Where on the periodic table is your element located? (name the period, group, and block)
- How many protons, neutrons, and electrons does your element contain?
- What is its electron configuration?
- What is its atomic radius?
- What is its ionization energy?
- What is its electronegativity?
- What are some physical properties (color, texture, physical state)
- What are the boiling point and melting point of your element?
- How many valence electrons does you element have?
- What are some common ions formed by your element?

Important Tips to Remember:
- You will need to gather images during your search as well as information to answer the required questions.
- Keep track of the sources/websites you use. Click here to see a guide for formatting sources for your works cited page.
- When you do find a website, ask yourself if the website is relevant and reliable.
Part 2
Now that you have gathered information about your element, and relevant images or pictures, it is time to put all of this information together for your website. You will use Weebly editor to generate and publish your website. If you prefer to use another method for generating your website, please clear your idea with your teacher beforehand.
Your website must include the following elements:
- Home page with an introduction, catchy phrase, and link to your commercial (see Part 3)+ 2 pictures.
- A general information page outlining the 14 basic facts + 2 pictures
- An industrial page highlighting at least 3 uses and 1 compound + 2 pictures.
- A biological/medical page highlighting at least 3 uses and 1 compound + 2 pictures.
- (Honors Only) An environmental page highlighting at least 3 uses and 1 compound + 2 pictures.
- Works cited page with at least 3 properly cited sources.
Tips for Creating Your Website:
- View the example: Hydrogen Website
- You may use Google Sites to create this project OR you will need an email address to create a FREE account at weebly.com. You will NOT need to purchase anything to do this project.
- Start early and play around with different elements at Google sites/Weebly. If you are having difficulty, talk to your peers and teacher. Your teacher's computers are available during tutorials.
- Follow the rubric to make sure you are adding all required elements.
- This should be fun!
Part 3
The last thing for you to do is to create your commercial. Remember that your commercial should be informing your audience about your element in a way that is entertaining to watch.

Your commercial should contain the following:
- At least 6 appropriate images that reflect content in your website
- At least 2 informational facts about your element
- A catchy slogan as an attention grabber
- 30-60 seconds of content set to music
Tips for your commercial:
- Watch the example: Hydrogen Commercial
- It should seamlessly reflect a story about your element
- A song with a fast tempo will be able to fit more images
- It should be informative, but should also hold the audience's attention
- Follow the rubric to ensure all the information and components are included
